From the Pastor's Pen....tiumRecently, when our son, Geoff, was home for an extended weekend, he announced to us that he had decided to “walk in the graduation ceremony.” He will be graduate after 3 years because of college classes taken during High School. He has already begun taking classes for his Master’s degree and will be graduating again next year as well. Tyler is finally getting off the academia treadmill after 5 years and will be beginning his year-long pharmacy rotations in May. His first rotation?, a 6-week retail pharmacy experience in Wales, U.K. The other day, Tyler was telling me how much thicker the pharmaceutical reference manual has become in just the last five years and how much more he is having to memorize for his board certification exam. Geoff has also indicated that there is so much more to know in the field of accounting & finance especially with the accounting scandals of recent history as well as the ever-increasing complexity of the tax code. There is so much new information that our kids need to know in order to graduate from college. The amount of new information doubles in months rather than decades. It reminds me of the following quotation: He who knows not that he knows not is a fool; avoid him. He who knows not and knows that he knows not is a student; teach him He who knows and knows not that he knows is asleep; wake him. He who knows and knows that he knows is a wise man; follow him. It is evident that we have all shared all four of these roles: fool, student, asleep, and wise person. With so much information available to us, it is tempting to think that the more information we possess, the wiser we will be. But there is an ever increasing body of data that we do not know. Our capacity to learn is vastly outpaced by the increase of information coming at us constantly. So how do you know what you should know, since you cannot know it all? The Proverbs speak to this and I think they say that we need to know. So what should we know? I hear the answer in 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths”. PASTOR STEVE
